I switched to VM from BT over a year ago and have had no complaints about the internet service until now – it was a lot better than by old ADSL BT service. Shortly after the new year I started to notice streaming videos were getting stuck and ping rates were increasing dramatically in online games.

I’m fairly confident this is a purely an over-utilisation issue because the service is fine at 8am – pingtest.net records an A rated service; but by 5pm in the evening it shows an F grade with pack loss around 28% and equally horrific ping/jitter.

At peak time games are out of the question, as is youtube/iplayer. Even browsing web pages is a hassle as the high packet loss means pages often have to be re-requested. Quite simply the quality of service is appalling making my old ADSL line look positively wonderful; which is a sad state of affairs.

Can anything be done to get back the service I used to have? Would upgrading to the XXL service (from XL) get me away from the congested UBR? (if that is a the issue)

I would like to get my IE bookmarks from the full backup I have on an external disk (made with windows 2000 backup utility) but don't know what file I'm looking for. I forgot to export them to a bookmarks.htm file before wiping the system.
